Memphis Blast misses chance to introduce Clarksville Rattlers to the GDFL
Memphis, TN-Despite the Gridiron Developmental Football League having the start of its season pushed back Until June, excitement still pulsates through the nation for the return of football. However, there is a particular buzz that is coming out of Memphis as they prepare themselves for the start of the season. Not only does the team celebrate their 20th season, but they would have been the Clarksville Rattlers’ introduction to the GDFL.
The Blast have been a part of the league since its creation in 11 years ago and are hoping that this will be the year that they capture their first GDFL Championship. However, they know that they have to overcome tough competition before they can even think of the playoffs. These teams do not have much experience against each other, which would have led to an enticing match up. The Blast an almost completely new roster from the season before, one that is one of the youngest and hungriest that they have had in years. New additions such as Chakel Gates, bring versatility to the team and provide stability at quarterback, an area where the team lacked in their 2019 campaign.
While veterans like Derek “Dee” Garner, made standout plays on both offense and defense. His play led to him earning All-GDFL honors. For the Rattlers, they have one of the most well-coached organizations in all of professional development football. Owner and head coach, Bo Townsend already knows what it takes to play championship football.
While the running backs coach for the St. Petersburg Sharks who won the SSFL Championship in 2004. He then spent time with the Clarksville Wolfpack and the Tri-City Outlaws where he won two division titles. His coaching helped to lead the team to an undefeated regular season record in their final season a part of the TFA spring league. As we all patiently await the start of the season, this game would have been a perfect opener for both teams with a lot to prove this season. Who knows, it could have been a potential precursor to a playoff game.
